This Is Hastings were first impressed by Carl Carzana‘s work at bi-weekly creatives show and tell Makers @ MEC. The Hastings based illustrator primarily works digitally, however each digitally finished piece starts out hand drawn and inked.
He studied Fine Art at the old Hastings College (before its move to the station.) Since completing college, Carl has had a lot of fun working in various different pubs and bars.- such as the Hastings Arms and Revolver Lounge, but has decided to pursue his passion – starting a ‘make art my actual job’ initiative!
With a passion for drawing portraits as well as experimenting with tone and texture in each piece, Carl has hit the ground running, with his initiative well underway – having been recently commissioned to do a flyer design for Bell’s Bicycles, advertising their range of hire bikes.
Carl has also entered a portraiture competition to design a record sleeve cover, inspired by Ladyhawke’s new single Anxiety.
Results are yet to be announced, but we’ve got our fingers crossed for Carl, as this could result in his design being promoted by Ladyhawke and Island Records, which “would be sweet.”
The plan is to build a solid reputation and portfolio, in and around Hastings – designing flyers, posters, album covers etc.
This Is Hastings implores Carl to take good care of his hands, as we suspect them to be immediately bitten off by any half-savvy local band or business!
