Local Talent – Haydn Cornner

This Is Hastings was stopped on George Street, instructed to make haste towards The Optical Lounge and meet a very interesting chap by the name of Haydn Cornner … so we did!

Born in 1961 above his Grandmother’s haberdashery shop in Tunbridge Wells., Haydn comes from a painting family (his mum painted Subbuteo men.) He started painting at the age of 12 – selling his first work a year later!

After studying at The Medway College of Design and Brighton University, as well as once being “run over by a red Ford Escort”, Haydnn has a somewhat of a unique perspective on things!

Living in Hastings for twenty years with his wife, daughters and chocolate Labrador called Doris (definitely one for the Dog Blog!) Working as an artist and illustrator since 1989 – first started selling work in Hastings in Linda King’s ‘Fab and Groovy’ shop in the early 90s.

On the illustration side he is represented by agents in London and New York and have worked for clients that include The BBC, The New Yorker, Cadburys, United Airlines and Penguin Books.

Since 1993 I have been represented by the Portal Gallery in London, who sell my original paintings. I have had six solo shows and contributed to several group exhibitions.

Working from his studio space near the Library, he has recently started to produce limited edition Giclee prints of both my paintings and graphic work – these are available at the Week-End Gallery in the Old Town.

As if all that wasn’t enough Haydn also “sings, plays guitar and falls over” in the band called Colonel Mustard.

At present he is concentrating on his paintings, prints, graphic work and as well as his “frivolous and slightly perpendicular” ‘brand’ The Ministry of Normality.

The Ministry of Normality is an official octagonal organisation with a remit to promote rational, plausible, sensible, long-winded, sand-blasted, and fine-boned implementations.

Under the strict guidance of Minister Poon, the Ministry offers prints and other diligently-fluted paraphernalia for sale– Now available is the Ministry’s new natural after-shave lotion– the first of Minister Poon’s ‘Gentlemen’s Products’ range.

This Is Hastings was especially intrigued to hear of plans to launch a “The Ministry of Normality – Natural After Shave Lotion”

Designed to re-nourish and protect the skin after shaving, the bountiful boutique of lemongrass, cedar wood and juniper berry will enhance every gentlemen’s day. Apply a small amount to the skin and the mixture of essential oils, vitamins and natural nuances will soon have your face feeling soothed, enriched and content.

It is not tested on panthers, jackdaws, stick insects, or any other animal. Free of nasty ingredients found in most petrochemical based after shaves, The Ministry of Normality’s Natural After Shave Lotion shuns parabens and pegs, shows sulphates the door and gives mineral oil the elbow.

Minster Poon would settle for nothing less – ensuring that your shaving experience is healthy for you and the rest of the universe.

The Ministry of Normality and Haydn Cornner’s prints will be exhibited at The Optical Lounge in the Old Town from Friday 25th May – for one week.
