This Is Hastings @ Moulin Rouge Fancy Dress Night

This Is Hastings donned its lacy undergarments and headed up to the Le Singe en Laiton (The Brass Monkey) for some saucy fun at the Moulin Rouge Fancy Dress Night.

The interior was transformed into a circus of debauchery fitted out with ribbon cages and a dancing pole positioned around the stage, with folks from The Electric Carnival Clubnight spinning all the right tunes.

Let’s Eat Local – The Pelican

Published on May 26, 2012 in Food & Drink, Reviews

The sun has certainly got its hat on, and This Is Hastings went in search of a cooling treat to keep the heat at bay.

Happening upon The Pelican (a bright and breezy kiosk / cafe on the Old Town sea-front) we stopped to sample their frozen wares.

Ms. Hastings opted for the healthy choice of frozen yogurt topped with honey and raspberries – a perfect breakfast option before hitting the beach (although the yogurt melts fast in the sun, so eat it quick or you may be left with a yogurt smoothie.

Slightly less health conscious, Mr. Hastings sampled the home-made Mr. Whippy style ice-cream. Although unlike Mr. Whippy, it looked and tasted a lot more wholesome – full of classic Cornish ice-cream flavour.

Topped off with a few cheeky chocolate buttons, and some blueberries to give it some sort of healthy element.

Whether choosing frogurt or ice-cream, there is an array of toppings to mix and match with – from healthy fruits and berries to chocolate finger and gummy bears.

A quick and cooling treat to enjoy in the sunshine, whatever the time of day!

Let’s Get Physical – Spinning

Feeling rather pleased at the progress made at Kettle Bells, This is Hastings continues its mission to get fit in the name of research.

This week’s workout – Spinning: a static workout on bikes that have resistance levels instead of gears – great for building fitness levels quickly whilst toning the legs and arms.

Also great for near death experiences (a slight exaggeration) But this workout is not for those who break out in a sweat playing a game of swing ball with granny in the garden.

With performances from the Cajun Dawgs and dancing from the Active Cherry Dancers, all combined with The Electric Carnival Clubnight  this is an event not to be missed!

Arrive before 11 in your finest burlesque outfits (or just some conveniently placed balloons) to gain free entry.

Get Involved – Royal Standard Pub Quiz

Published on May 24, 2012 in Events, News, Pubs & Clubs

Last night saw a momentous victory for team This Is Hastings, at the bi-weekly obscure knowledge-fest that is the Royal Standard Pub Quiz!

The team was made up from a melting pot of general knowledge prowess, including local talent Tara Deighton, and Day Tripper Morgan – an air conditioning fitter, that decided to stay the night in Hastings (an excellent choice in hindsight!)

Quizmaster Tom’s theme for the evening was “The Sun” – with some extreme solar-based brain ticklers.

This Is Hastings particularly excelled in the cartoon bear picture round, and links round. (all answers linked to “seas”)

Also winning a special prize of cuddly Care Bear Love a Lot, for the bonus sun-based limerick round – unfortunately too crass for publishing (“There once was was girl from The Sun …”)

With pockets jangling from the astronomical £22 prize pot, This Is Hastings were entirely humble when taking their victory lap of the pub …

If you want to test your wits against some of Hastings’ finest, get down to the Royal Standard every other Wednesday from 8.30pm!

Looking Forward – Capsule

This Is Hastings stumbled across a brand new shop this week, that has made an appearance on Courthouse Street in Hastings Old Town.

Capsule offers itself as a new “affordable, high quality ” men’s clothing store. All the stock is brand new (but not necessarily current!)

The shop itself is a visual treat to behold, with fixtures and fittings locally made and provided by Leigh Dyer and Dave Reading!

With a fabulous range of shirts, socks and shoes we are sure that Capsule will be a storming success.

When you pop in, make sure to pick up one of their style cards, so that the lovely owner (Lisa) can start building up a profile of her customers’ size and style requirements – so when new stock is ordered in, its made to measure!
